Fishtanks guide – Steam Solo (2024)

Overview

A ‘how to get them to breed’ in My time at Portia. The fishtanks have a few hidden mechanics, that are explained here for easier handling.Several of the more complex features of keeping fish have been removed since the Early Access stage.

Species, Ranks and Feeding

– There are two types of fish food available in this game:
a) Dough balls (mixer recepy: flour + muckus or purchase them prefabricated at Sophia’s farm store)
b) Bug eggs (looted from Mr.Ladybug near Portia East Gate or behind Sophia’s farm)

– Caterpillars only work as bait, not as food (they can be found randomly by picking up wild plants or bought at Sophia’s farm store).

Fishtanks guide – Steam Solo (1)– Stand in front of the tank with the chosen fish food in your quick item bar so you are holding it in your hand. Then left click (default setting) to insert an amount of your choice of the food into the tank.

Fish can be kept alive with 1 (one) bugegg daily. Alternatively a fish can be fed with 2-3 (two to three) doughballs per day.
It is possible to put more food into the tank than neccessary, the excess food is stored in the tank until it is required.

Fishtanks guide – Steam Solo (2)– If the fish are not fed or not fed enough a warning symbol -showing a hungry fish- will appear above the tank.
Apparently fish wont die anymore with the last updates, but if they are not fed, they wont produce offspring.

– The symbol will appear after 2 days of misfeeding.

– Fish can be removed from a tank and stored alive in a storage box for an extended perid of time and then put back into the fishtank.

The following fish are currently in the game:

Cat fish
Golden Salmon
Blade fish
Banner fish
Fire fish
Frog fish
Bubble fish
Goliath fish
Blue Mackarel
Koi
Latern fish
Wise fish
Gladiator fish

(The ‘King Salmon’ from earlier versions of the game now counts as the ‘Golden Salmon King’ and is no longer a seperate species from the Golden Salmon.
Instead the Gladiator fish was added as a new species.)

Fish are ranked as ‘normal’, ’emperor’ and ‘king’ fish versions.

Interestingly the later added King-fish are of a higher ranking than the emperor-fish.

Kings have a slightly different shape that sets them apart from normal and emperor fish. While some may even sport a completely different coloration (Goldwn Slamon, Banner Fish, Koi, Wise Fish) other king-fish are harder to distinguish from their normal or emperor version (Blade Fish, Catfish, Frog Fish, Bubble Fish. Latern Fish, Gladiator Fish and Blue Mackarel).

When fishing while having the passive skill ‘Fish Enceclopedia’, the emperor-fish will be marked with a golden star, the king-fish will be marked with a golden crown.

Once the museum is built and opened, fish can be donated at the fishtank on the upper floor.
There are three rewards, which will be sent by mail, once certain goals are met.

1) Mackarel Sword (unique) – Donate all species of fish (any rank).
2) Master Fishing rod (unique) – Donate all species of emperor-fish (rank emperor or king).
3) Crystal Fishtank (can also be purchased in the harbor store) – Donate all species of king-fish (rank king).

You can take a shortcut and only donate king-fish to receive all three rewards in one go. However, the Master fishing rod is far better than the other two fishing rods available in game, so donating the emperors first will make catching the required king-fish a lot easier.
(Also there has been a bug in earlier versions which prevented the master fishing rod to be mailed, if the emperor-fish donation was skipped.)

Tank capacity for breeding

1) The small display tank has an available holding space of 5 (five) empty slots. Plus an additional 5 (five) slots for possible offspring.
However if the original capacity of 5 (five) fish is exceeded due to breeding, you are informed that you need to remove fish, while you are trying to feed them. It is possible to keep the breeding going by adding excess food for several days before the limit is reached.
Is the limit of 10 (ten) fish reached however, further offspring will be postponed to spawn a day after enough fish have been removed from the tank.

Fishtanks guide – Steam Solo (3)If used regularly for breeding, the small tank can hold 4 (four) mature parent fish, and one offspring. Any offspring exceeding this has to be removed before a new fish can spawn unless you overfeed beforehand (= adding enough food for 4 to 9 fish for about a month before the tank limit is reached ~ 190 bug eggs or 380-570 dough balls).

(Left tank: 2 firefish and their spawn, right tank: 2 catfish and their spawn)

2) The big display tank has an available holding space of 15 (fifteen) empty slots. This leaves room for 7 pairs and one offspring. Again all offspring exceeding this limit have to be removed before more food can be added to the tank. While overfeeding is possible here as well, it takes enormous amounts of food.

3) The crystal fishtank has an available holding space of 20 (twenty) empty slots. And offers space for 10 pairs. Exceeding the limit with offspring and overfeeding are again possible. However the crystal fishtank water is almost opaque and it is difficult to see the fish inside of it. While it can be efficiently used for mass breeding fish for cooking, it is not a good display option. And it is hard to tell when, which or how many of the fish had offspring.

Removing a fish of a breeding pair from the tank will reset your progress and prolong the time until an offspring will spawn, even if the fish is put back into the tank immediately.

Breeding basics

1) To breed fish in your tanks, you need at least:

– two fish of a kind and same rank together in the tank
– enough space for their offspring to spawn in the tank
– 2 to 6 units of food daily per pair of fish (bugeggs have more nutrients than dough)
– patience: reproduction may require ~8 days (kingfish).

Two ‘normal’ fish of the same kind will have ‘normal’ offspring.
Two ’emperor’-fish of the same kind will have ’emperor’ offspring.
Two ‘king’-fish of the same kind will have a ‘king’ offspring.
(A pair of fish of the same kind but from different ranks will NOT yield offspring and obviously fish of two different species can not reproduce together either.)

With the recent changes in the fishing system, going fishing is actually the more economic choice over breeding to collect many fish fast.
Breeding can be mostly recommended for the rare king fish. (You’ll get 1 king fish from a breeding pair every 8 days. At 100% market value you can sell kingfish for 5,000 Gol each.)

(The first fish removed from a tank is always the last fish that has ‘entered’ the tank = the offsping after successful breeding. – Imagine it like stacking the fish on top of each other and then removing the fish again from the top.)

Changes since Early Access – overview

– Fish don’t die anymore
– Fish no longer need time and space in the tank to ‘mature’
– No more food preferences for the fish species (herbivores/carnivores)
– Hidden extra tank capacity for newly spawned fish was added
– King-fish rank was added
– King salmon became golden salmon king
– Gladiator fish were added
– Normal and emperor Bubblefish changed color from green to pink
– Crystal fishtank was added
