Tuesday, March 23, 2004 2A, Johnson City Press Charlotte Brinkley Charlotte C. Brinkley, age 74, 259 Liberty Church Gray, passed away Monday, March 22, 2004, at home after a lengthy illness. She was a native of Saltville, VA and lived most of her life there until moving to Gray in 1969. She was a daughter of the late Ethel Hicks and Worley R. Frye.
Mrs. Brinkley was a member of Gray United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by sister, Betty Frye Denton; 3 brothers, Allen L. Frye, J.W. Frye and Marvin Frye.
She is survived by her husband, K. Brinkley, of 1 the home, 2 daughters and 1 sons-in-law, Denise and Franklin Gillman of Gray, Lori and Michael Sluder of Knoxville; 2 sisters, Louise Bridges of Maryland, Christine Grogg of California; 4 grandchildren, Ricky Babb and wife Mary Elizabeth of Johnson City, Kenneth Babb and wife Eloise of Johnson City, Joshua and Katie Sluder both of Knoxville; 2 Great-grandchildren Stephanie and Emily Babb. Pallbearers will be Ricky Babb, Kenneth Babb, Bill Sluder, Don Hall, Connie Dove and Steve Helman. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and family of Gray United Methodist Church. Ferguson; 2 daughters, Betty Ferguson and Polly McKewen; one son, Hal Ferguson; one grandson, Mickey Ferguson; three brothers, Dave, Jim and Bob Leedy; two sisters, Bessie Jeter and Fannie Kate Ferguson. Hankins did graduate work at UVA, Charlottesville, VA and UNC, Chapel Hill, NC, was a member of the Association of University Women, the John Sevier Daughters of American Revolution, served on the Board of Governors of Carroll Reece Museum, served on the Teen Town Board and seventeen years on the Girls Club Board, completed two terms as president of The Symphony Guild, served on the board of Community Concerts, Library Board, Pro Arts Council, served as a Gray Lady at Mountain Home, was a charter member of the Junior League, and a member of the Fortnightly and Tuesday Book Clubs. Mrs. Hankins was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church. She is survived by her daughter, Calvert Hankins Mathes Williams and her husband, Edwin Winston Williams, Johnson City, TN and one grandson, Walter Hankins Mathes, Nashville, TN.

He was a son of the late Samuel Lee Linker and Eunice Sloop Linker and was also preceded in death by one son, Gordon Clifford Linker. Mr. Linker was a U.S Army Korean War Veteran. He was a Presbyterian. Mr.

I Dessie Payne Miss Dessie Maude Payne, Age 93, of Asbury Place, formerly of 108 East 11th Avenue, died at 8:00 P.M. Saturday, March 20, 2004. She was born August 15th, 1910 in Greene County, TN and was the daughter of Belvin Wheeler Payne and Dessie Tilla Murr Payne. Although Miss Payne was a Greene County native she lived in Washington County all of her adult life. In addition to her mother and father, Miss Payne was preceded in death by her three sisters: Hassie Theola Payne (infant), Sarah Justine Payne Ledbetter, Mary Winona Payne, and a nephew, Thomas Wheeler Ledbetter.
Survivors include one nephew, Howard Payne Ledbetter, Fall Branch, and three nieces, Mary Ann Ledbetter Mobley, Orlando, FL, Dessie Lindaree Ledbetter Pearce, Shreveport, LA, Wilma Jane Ledbetter Ernst, Lincoln, NE; and several great nieces and nephews. Miss Payne graduated from high school at Fall Branch, Tennessee and attended the East Tennessee State Normal School teacher preparation program. Miss Payne taught in the Fall Branch elementary school during the regular school year and attended Normal School in the summers. During the early 1930s she moved to labnson City where she continued to attend college during summers and teach at the elementary school level. Miss Payne held teaching assignments at elementary, middle and upper grade levels. While serving as Librarian at Science Hill High School, she completed the Master's Degree in Library Science at George Peabody College for Teachers (of Vanderbilt University).
Miss Payne was Librarian at Science Hill High School until she retired in 1972. She was a Life Member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional organization for women in education, and was a member of the Washington County Retired Teachers Association. Miss Payne was active in the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She and other members of her family are listed among the First Families of Tennessee Miss Payne was active in Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, having become a member in 1936. She was responsible for organizing and developing the Munsey Library and served in many roles at Munsey during her lifetime.
She was an active member of United Methodist Women and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 24th at 1:00 P.M. in the parlor at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow immediately at 2:00 P.M. in the sanctuary led by the Reverends David Lovelace and Brian Taylor; music by the Reverend Douglas Grove-Delarnett and Jane LaPella.

Mr. Chase was a Washington County native and son of the late Joseph Wilbur and Mary Diehl Chase, two brothers, Ray Diehl Chase and Clarence Mitchell Chase. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alice Stines Chase; a son, Albert Lee Chase and wife Susan Bradley Chase of Johnson City; a grandson Bradley Paul Chase and granddaughter Ashley Briana Chase also of Johnson City; additional survivors include sister Helen Chase Saylor, Brother Joe Wilbur Chase, Jr. and wife Phyllis, sister-in-law Ruth Ferguson Chase all of Jonesborough; and six nephews and nieces of the Chase and Saylor Families. Hugh was a career farmer adept at both animal and plant ventures, however he specialized in vegetable truck farming.
He was known for the prize quality of his crops. His career spanned most of his life. He grew up, lived and died with the land he loved. Additionally he was an avid sports fan, especially of Atlanta Braves Baseball. In his own younger baseball days he was known to have a vicious curve ball.
He also enjoyed fishing, coon hunting and just visiting with his friends over the years. He was a simple man that lived and enjoyed hard work, and in his way he loved, and was loved. The earth that will miss the touch of his hand, will now cradle his remains.
