Mahoney outspends others in City Commission battle By Jim Wozniak Press Staff Writer The first person to enter the 1991 City Commission race has garnered the most contributions and almost spent the most, financial records show.
Duffie Jones has collected $6,879 and spent $3,934 between Feb. 12 and April 17. Commissioner Dan Mahoney, who seeks re-election, outspent her by 66 cents and collected $4,749 between March 17 and April 17. Mickii Carter has taken in $2,570 and spent $1,527 between March 16 and April 17, Harry Gibson obtained $3,016 and dispersed $1,538 from April 5 to April 17 and Michael McCracken signed his form to indicate he had collected and spent less than $1,000, which does not require detailing. Meanwhile, records show money has dribbled in and out of the coffers of Charter Commission candidates.
Twenty-one of 22. who filed disclosure forms reported taking in and spending less than $1,000. June Huddleston was the sole candidate to exceed the mark. Candidates for elected both elected posts were required by Tuesday to submit to the election commissions in Washington, Carter and Sullivan counties- statements detailing their campaign income and expenses so far. She received $4,329 in contributions of $100 or less. Her biggest expenses have been $1,607 to the Johnson City Press for advertising and $919 to Foster Signs. Mahoney received a $350 donation from the Third National Corp. PAC, but the remainder came in contributions of $100 or less. His largest expenses were $1,565 to Ernie Collins Signs and $1,444 to the Press.
The Third National Corp. PAC, called the Good Government Fund, contains contributions from employees, officers and directors of that bank and its subsidiaries, which can draw from that account for donations. One subsidiary is Hamilton Bank in Johnson City, and Phil Carriger, the bank's chief executive officer, said senior management at the bank decides when it should donate.
