since it seems there is a lot of confusion about the imperial city keys i figured i would do a quick write up on the locations for the vaults

  • daedric embers key: inside of white gold tower, down a tunnel on the right instead of going straight through the dungeon
  • daedric shackle key: inside of imperial city prison, when you load in you head to the right and thats where the vault is

(neither dungeon vault requires fighting any enemies to access)

the other 6 keys are in imperial city itself:

  • monstrous tooth key: temple district
  • clawed trophy key: arboretum district
  • ethereal trophy key: arena district
  • bone shard key: memorial district
  • planar armor key: elven gardens district
  • legionary key: nobles district

in the imperial city all of the vaults are located along the outside rim of the district of the surface (you load into imperial city in the sewers portion of your alliances base and there are ladders that go up to each district, you get to imperial city by queuing from the alliance war menu (caution IC is a pvp area, if you are not confident you can wait till after the event to spend the keys)

hopefully this helps lol

edit: i found a good image for where the IC vaults are if that might help

Also, I think the vaults in the districts are "safe" areas, because when I was in the Clawed Trophy Vault there was an enemy player in there already. We left each other alone, but I noticed that I was glowing blue as though standing beside the trap door where you enter the district from your base, or while up on a side balcony if you enter from an adjacent district.

And the vault entrances are often near the sides of the district, so it might be convenient to enter the district from an adjacent district so you can stay up on the balcony until it's safe to jump down and run to the vault entrance.

TLDR-- Don't be too terrified to go to the Imperial City to use your vault keys!

i was about to be annoyed that these were character-bound, but am i misunderstanding - you only need the one key that drops in event boxes to open a chest, and not 60 (like fragments)?

Yes, inside the vaults is a safe area, but just outside is not.
I believe the drops from the vaults are pretty limited though - agility, endurance, willpower, the IC boss helmets, xivkyn motif pages, and the nibenese court wizard style pages.

Another important tip for those new to IC: the only thing you lose for dying is half the Tel Var you are carrying. So bank your tel var before heading out and you have nothing to lose.

Yes, but those are things that a lot of players might not have yet. where to use the imperial city keys (8)

I think it's pretty neat that this event includes PvP currency as a possible reward, plus incentives (the keys) that might get some players to head to the Imperial City.

that is correct these are the full keys, not the individual fragments awarded from completing ICP/WGT dungeons or farming in IC

The vaults are all on the outer walls of the districts and are clearly marked on the base game ui map. 😀

So is there anything actually worth getting in these vaults, other than the WGT and ICP vaults?

Worth getting is often a very subjective decision. Of the items that are in them that I listed above, the 3 weapon sets (agility/willpower/endurance) are ubiquitous from random dungeon rewards and so not worthwhile.
Nibenese court wizard style pages might be nice if you don't have them, not sure what they sell for these days. The only other way to get these is to buy them from another player who got them from a vault
Xivkyn motifs arent terrible, but you may already have all of them from Jubilee or other players
The IC monster helmets have only one other source, actually killing the IC topside bosses, and will presumably be bound from the vaults. However, many of these sets aren't that compelling for anyone, and of the ones I do know people use its primarily in PVP. So value there will vary a lot from person to person.

THANK YOU for this thread! where to use the imperial city keys (20)

Ok adding this for others and so I can stop editing this post lol.

This was my experience with the 2 dungeons:

    • I went to WGT, Vault door, I needed to spend 150 key fragments to enter the room, then used one Daedric Embers Key on the chest. (only had one)
    • Next went to ICP, I was able to walk right into the vault, did NOT need any key fragments?? Chest inside let me use all 3 Daedric Shackles Keys on the chest in one go. Also this was the first time I went to either of these dungeons.

still you would prefer to do them vaults in the most desert time on your server, as carrying 10K TelVar maximizes the chance of style pages drop. so this require to reach them vaults without dying.

True, worst who can happen is that you die, same if trying to solo an world boss.

But do bank all you telvar, this is more an problem if you never go to IC but get them as daily rewards over years.
You can have tousands and you will loose half if killed.

If you are required fragment you do not have the correct key.

Remember to set dungeon mode to veteran for the purple drops, you will not fight anything but you can get stuff like spell power cure jewelry who is nice in purple. Not sure if this matter but no reason to take an risk and getting blue jewelry.

Can any confirm if normal drop purple or just blue?

There a seal or sigil of Imperial retreat that you can buy, I think with AP, that takes you back to base. But, its character bound and you can't bank it. I bought a few when I was trying to get my crafter to grab a copy of the crafting stations.

its easier (and cheaper) to just queue for a low pop cyro campaign, then it puts you right next to a wayshrine to get out

I did get some purple jewelry and my diff is set on normal not vet so thats cool.

Thanks to your reply I think I figured out what I did wrong\what happened with the vault in WGT.

I thought I had a key for that door but I think I was mistaken.
So with no key you have the option to spend 150 key fragments to enter the door and also access the chest, which consumes them?

the vaults in the dungeons cost 150 fragements

the vaults in IC cost 60 fragments

if you take multiples (so you take 300 fragments to a dungeon vault for example) it would convert all of those into 2 keys

You do need to discover the vaults first time for them to show up on the map. You will know them in person because they are the glowing blue doors.

you also get key fragments for completing ICP/WGT dungeons (i think its between 5 and 9), but its much more efficient to farm them in IC lol

still at the current pricing of those its still a pretty good payday from the end of those dungeons lol
