Every Returning Character In Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny (2024)

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny!Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny includes several returning characters from the franchise's past. Over a decade after it was presumed the Indiana Jones franchise was over, Lucasfilm and Disney found a way to try and right the wrongs from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull to give Harrison Ford's character a proper send-off. Indiana Jones 5 brings back many of the familiar hallmarks of the franchise Steven Spielberg and George Lucas created, even if director James Mangold was now the one leading the charge after Spielberg's exit. This includes another globe-trotting adventure and fighting Nazis with some characters from the past along for the ride.

The Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny cast includes plenty of notable new additions to the franchise, such as Mads Mikkelsen as the main villain Jürgen Voller and Boyd Holbrook as Klaber. While there are several characters from Indiana Jones' past who do not have a role to play in his final movie appearance, the movie still makes an effort to include some of the more important individuals in his life. The end result is that there are a few Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny returning characters from prior installments who have one last encounter with Harrison Ford's archeologist or are mentioned in different capacities.

6 Indiana Jones

Harrison Ford returns as Indiana Jones one last time in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. He got his start playing the adventurer in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark, returned in 1984 for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and concluded the original trilogy in 1989 with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Harrison Ford waited nearly two decades to return to the iconic character for a fourth installment. 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull divided audiences, opening the door for another movie. Harrison Ford's return in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny marks his fifth appearance in the franchise.

Indiana Jones' role in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is similar to the prior movies. Harrison Ford leads the charge in a search for a rare and powerful artifact that brings him into conflict with the Nazis. One element of the role that makes Indiana Jones' return different is the use of de-aging technology to have more young Indy adventures in Indiana Jones 5. This allowed Harrison Ford to play a younger version of himself that takes the character back to his prime years, while the main story set in 1969 leads to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's ending and Ford's send-off.

5 Sallah

Sallah is another one of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's returning characters from the franchise. John Rhys-Davies makes his third appearance as the character in the movie. Audiences originally met Sallah in Raiders of the Lost Ark as a trusted ally of Indiana Jones' due to their extensive history together. It was not until Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade that Sallah returned to play a bigger role in the search for the Holy Grail. The return of John Rhys-Davies as Sallah in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny meant bringing back one of his oldest friends for the final installment.

4 Marion

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny includes another returning movie character by having Marion Ravenwood appear one more time. Karen Allen made her debut as Indiana Jones' love interest in Raiders of the Lost Ark, but she was surprisingly left out of the next two movies. It was not until Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull that audiences got to see Marion again. This included the revelation that she gave birth to a son who Indiana Jones fathered. The movie ended with her and Indiana Jones getting married, so an appearance in Indiana Jones 5 was expected in some fashion.

Marion's return in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny comes with some surprises. The movie reveals that she and Indiana Jones did not remain together after their wedding and got a divorce. This allows for the characters to reunite during Indiana Jones 5. Despite the highs and lows of their relationship, including Karen Allen again helps cement the fact that Marion is Indiana Jones' true love. Her being included as one of Indiana Jones 5's returning characters makes sense in that regard, as well as it enables the franchise finale to include its biggest female character.

3 Mutt Is Mentioned In Indiana Jones 5

Shia LaBeouf's Mutt Williams does not return in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, but the character is mentioned in the movie. Audiences were introduced to Indiana Jones' secret son in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which left the door open for him to return. Instead, the franchise delivers a rather heartbreaking reveal that Mutt died before Indiana Jones 5. The movie reveals that he enlisted in the army to fight in Vietnam but that he was killed during the war. The fallout of his death resulted in Marion and Indiana Jones divorcing. This gives Shia LaBeouf's character a big role play without appearing.

2 Indiana Jones' Father Is Mentioned In The Dial Of Destiny

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny mentions another familiar character by referencing Indiana Jones' father, Henry Jones Sr. Played by Sean Connery in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Henry Jones only appeared in the final installment of the original trilogy. The franchise then revealed in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull that he died in the years between those movies. With a return from Sean Connery not possible after his passing in 2020, the mention of Indiana Jones' father is the best possible way to include him if he could not be one of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's returning characters.

1 Every Character From Indy’s Past NOT From A Previous Movie

The combination of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny characters from past installments who return or are referenced is not the only way the movie explores Harrison Ford's character's past. The movie introduces several characters from the archeologist's past who were not in a previous movie. Introducing these various characters was done instead of bringing back other potential familiar faces, making it so a major figure like Short Round is not in Indiana Jones 5. These are the characters not from previous movies who are connected to Indiana Jones' past.

Basil Shaw

Basil Shaw (Toby Jones) is introduced as a part of Indy's past through the opening Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny flashbacks. He is a fellow archaeologist and a close friend of Indy. They go on an adventure together in 1944 that leads to the discovery of The Antikythera and an encounter with the Nazis. Basil Shaw passed down the knowledge of the device to his daughter before he died, which occurred years before the main plot of the movie.

Helena Shaw

Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) plays a pivotal role in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. She is Basil Shaw's daughter and Indiana Jones' goddaughter who searches for The Antikythera. Although they spend most of their time together during the 1969 portion of the movie, flashbacks are also used to show Helena and Indy interacting when she is much younger. This allows Indiana Jones 5 to explore how their relationship has changed over time and explore a bit more of Indiana Jones' past in the process.

Renaldo

Another character from Indy's past included in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is Renaldo (Antonio Banderas). He is a sailor and diver who previously worked with and helped Indiana Jones on past missions. They reunite in 1969 as part of Indiana Jones' final adventure, allowing Renaldo to assist his old friend one last time. He plays a very small role in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, but his relationship and history with Indy is still important.
